Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
New research reveals that individuals who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals buying these drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
