Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.
Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.
Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama work together symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu now.
