Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
