Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Brilliance in Positive Aspect for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at their home stadium was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had allowed a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign falling apart, or was there ever a thread holding it together in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, before he publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

The Roman club became as messy on the pitch as off the field, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unforeseen Presence

At least one man kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this season. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, his parent club were attempting to remain there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to weaken their team lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances for Lazio in that campaign, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to determine the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
